Building for Africa: Lessons from a Burundi Software Company

What it's like to build a software development company in Gitega, Burundi — the challenges, advantages, and lessons that apply to builders everywhere.

Starting from Gitega

Popeki is based in Gitega, the political capital of Burundi. It's not San Francisco. It's not Nairobi or Lagos. It's a small city in one of the smallest countries in Africa. And that's exactly the point.

There's a narrative in tech that you need to be in a major hub to build a real software company. You need to be where the investors are, where the talent pool is, where the conferences happen. We've found that narrative to be mostly wrong.

The internet is the great equalizer

Our tools are the same as every other software company: VS Code, GitHub, Vercel, Resend, Figma. Our code runs on the same servers, our sites load on the same CDNs, our emails arrive in the same inboxes. The output is indistinguishable from work done in Silicon Valley.

What matters is the work, not the zip code. A well-built Next.js application works the same whether it was written in Gitega or San Francisco. Clients care about quality, communication, and reliability — not where your office is.

Advantages of building from Burundi

Lower cost of living means we can offer competitive rates without sacrificing quality of life. A project that would cost $20K-$50K from a US agency costs $2K-$10K from us — same tech stack, same build quality, dramatically different pricing.

Time zone overlap with European and African markets is natural. We work East Africa Time (GMT+2), which means morning overlap with Asian markets and afternoon overlap with European clients. US clients are served asynchronously, which actually works well — they send requirements in the evening, we deliver results by their morning.

Challenges we've navigated

Internet reliability was the biggest early challenge. Power outages, slow connections, and downtime are real. The solution: redundant internet connections, a backup power system, and architecture that doesn't depend on always-on connectivity. We push code when we have good connections and work offline when we don't.

Payment infrastructure is another challenge. Receiving international payments in Burundi isn't as simple as connecting Stripe. We've worked out reliable payment channels, but it took iteration. Every African developer building for international clients knows this friction.

Lessons for builders everywhere

Constraint breeds creativity. When you can't throw money at a problem, you build smarter solutions. When your internet is unreliable, you build resilient systems. When your market is small, you build for the world. These constraints made us better engineers.

Start shipping before you feel ready. Our first templates weren't perfect. Our first client project had rough edges. But shipping early gave us feedback, credibility, and momentum. The alternative — waiting until everything is polished — means waiting forever.

The African tech ecosystem

Africa has the youngest population on Earth and the fastest-growing demand for software. Businesses across the continent need exactly what we build — web applications, business systems, and digital tools. The market is enormous and underserved.

Every month, more African developers are shipping real products to real users. The infrastructure is improving. The talent is already here. We're not waiting for permission from Silicon Valley — we're building now, with the tools we have, for the markets we know.
